Sub-association for horses

Number of members: +- 160

The horse breeding association (PFC) is a sub-association from Study association ‘’De Veetelers’’ with a special focus on horses. Although the name suggests that we are mainly engaged in breeding, the PFC covers all aspects of the horse sector.

We as the PFC, aim to give Animal Sciences students some practical experience in addition to the knowledge that is acquired in lectures. We do this by organizing excursions throughout the year to various horse events, clinics, stud farms and other horse businesses. This year for example, we visited the Curly Horse Breeding farm from Mireille Wösten, we went to Jumping Amsterdam, we got a tour on the horse dairy farm Orchid's Paardenmelkerij and we got acquainted with the American Miniature Horse at Stable Hazelberg. In addition, there is a beginner's class organized annually and a clinic and/or trailride for the advanced riders, for example vaulting, cross or western riding. The PFC does not only organize interesting and fun activities, it also emphasizes learning. Every year, an informative theme or discussion evening is organized. The theme of this year was 'From the outside in'. We looked at important aspects of judging a (dressage) competition and common equine diagnoses, such as lameness. We try to end each academic year with a domestic or foreign excursion weekend, in which we visit several equestrian companies and organizations, while also enjoying trailrides and fun evenings together! In 2023, we went to Woudenberg where we rode two beautiful forest rides. Furthermore, we visited Manege Zonder Drempels where people with severe multiple disabilities can feel te movements of horse riding via a special canopy bed. We also got a lecture from Equifacts about recognizing pain in horses from a scientific perspective. All our activities are made possible by the financial support received from our sponsors, Equilin and Anivado.

We are always looking for new ideas for PFC activities, so I you have some fun ideas yourself, let us know.

If you want to add something extra to your studies in Wageningen and expand your knowledge in the field of horses, then become a member of the PFC!

Sub-association for sheep and goats and other small ruminants

Members: ±100

Hello Veetelers, Veetelerinnen and other interested parties,

The Sheep and Goat Study Club (SGSC) is, as the name suggests, interested in sheep and goats. However, not just sheep and goats are in the spotlight, as we also organize activities around other small ruminants like llamas and alpacas. Like other sub-associations of Study association "De Veetelers", the SGSC organizes fun and educational activities.

Our goal is to introduce students to the sheep and goat sector, which is relatively unknown. We do this by organizing various excursions both in the Netherlands or abroad. Some activities we plan include: a lambing course in which you will learn about the possible complications which can occur during the birth of a lamb and what measures should be taken to give it assistance; a sheep shearing course in which you will learn how to shear the wool of a sheep yourself, and even an excursion to an animal feed producing company. We also tend to visit alpaca farms once a year!

Last year, we organised a Binex to Brabant. Where we had the opportunity to visit many different goat farms in the area and also went to the “Day of the sheep” in Ermelo. Not only did we learn about the sheep and goat sector, but we also got to cuddle a lot of animals. We had such a great time with all the members who joined, so we cannot wait to organize another Binex this year as well.

If you want to broaden your horizons and learn new things, or just cuddle lambs and walk alpacas, join the SGSC on a field trip and sign up through the memberSHEEP form!

With bleating regards,

The SGSC board,

Evelien Smits (President)

Laura Berbee (Secretary)

Manon Greve (Treasurer)

Leah Gooren (General Member)

Sub-association for dairy farming

Members: ± 300

The Rundvee Fokkerij Studieclub (RFS) is a sub-association of study association "De Veetelers". The board has six enthusiastic cow lovers who aim to organize about five day excursions per year and also a host of other interesting activities. The purpose of the RFS is to show the members as much of the practice as possible, because the practical part of the study is often a bit flawed. We go with the students to cattle farmers, test accommodations or for example compound feed companies. A study evening is also organized under the name 'RFS Academy'. During the RFS Academy, an attempt is made to bridge the gap between theory and practice about a particular theme. A Binex and a Buitex are also organized annually. These are multi-day excursions in the Netherlands and abroad, respectively. At the beginning of the academic year, the General Members' Meeting (GMM) takes place every year, where members of the board are exchanged, the annual statement is shown and the members of all the other ins and outs are kept up-to-date. In conclusion, an informative and actual presentation is always held by a guest speaker. In addition, the cattle judging are inextricably linked to the RFS. Every year, a group of enthusiastic members is prepared to compete during the national student championships cattle judging (LSCV), where the RFS represents Wageningen University & Research.

In short, the RFS offers a wide range of entertainment for every cow lover!

With kind regard,

RFS Board,

Sub-association for intensive livestock

Members: ± 200

Since 1992, students are brought in touch with the intensive livestock component of the agricultural sector by Porculum. Not only the main branches, like pig and poultry, but less common, like veal-calves and minks, as well. The versatility of the sector, combined with its changes, challenges and issues, give way to the possibilities of discussion and various perspectives for the interested student.

Contact with the sector is made by excursions, of which one is planned every period. These excursions do not only consist of visiting livestock farms, but of secondary companies as well. Examples of these companies are Agrifirm, Vencomatic, PIC-NL and Westfort. Besides these excursions, we organize a “foreign excursion week” (BuitEx) and “internal excursion weekend” (BinEx) every year. During the “BinEx” and “BuitEx” the board organizes a program in which various companies are visited.

Besides these educative activities, we offer some social activities as well. Two examples of this are the 'Unlimited Spareribs Event' and the VATS'' ('Varken-Aan-'T-Spit', or 'Pig On A Spit' in English), the latter in which we work together with another sub-association.

As the board of this sub-association, we highly value attendance to activities. Knowledge from practice is often just as important as theoretical knowledge from the books. That is why we encourage you to take part in our excursions to gain applied knowledge during your studies.

We hope to see you during our activities

Greetings,

Sub-association for non-production animals

Members: ±170

Bestia Turba Ferina, BTF, is a sub-association of study association "De Veetelers".  We organize excursions, theme nights and other activities, all focused on non-production animals. This is a wide range of animals, from companion animals to wild animals and everything in between.

Every year we organize several activities and try to cover all facets within our sub-association.
Each period there is one activity. An annual activity is the anatomy evening, this event is organized in collaboration with the WUR. A variety of animals have already been covered, from snake to lamb and from rabbit to swan. Besides the annual anatomy evening, the Buitex (inernational excursion) and Binex (national excursion) take place alternately. During the Buitex/Binex a diverse range of foundations and companies are visited.
